JWT Token Decoder

Decode JSON Web Tokens (JWT) to inspect header algorithms and payload claims.

Processing Architecture: Client-Side (Processed locally in your web browser with zero server uploads)

How to Use JWT Token Decoder

  1. Step 1: Paste Token

Paste any three-part JWT token (header.payload.signature).

  2. Step 2: Inspect Claims

The parser decodes the Base64URL parts into formatted JSON.

  3. Step 3: Check Expiration

View formatted timestamps for issuedAt (iat) and expiresAt (exp) with active status badge.

Key Features & Capabilities

  • Separates Header (algorithm, type), Payload (claims), and Signature
  • Human-readable expiration countdown and status indicator
  • 100% client-side: sensitive authentication tokens are NEVER transmitted

Specifications & Limits

  • Batch Processing: Single Item
  • Free Tier Limit: Unlimited JWT decoding

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I trust a JWT after decoding it?

No. Decoding only makes the encoded header and payload readable. It does not verify the signature, issuer, audience, or other security conditions.

What do the three parts of a JWT mean?

The first part is the header, the second is the payload containing claims, and the third is the signature used for verification.

Can a JWT payload contain sensitive information?

It can, but it should not be assumed to be private. A typical JWT payload is encoded rather than encrypted, so anyone who has the token may be able to decode it.

Why does my decoded JWT look readable without a secret key?

Because Base64URL encoding is reversible. The secret or private key is involved in signing and verification, not in simply decoding the header and payload.
